Theme: Fuckin’ Sleepin, man.KEY: A = Andrew, J = John, M = Matt
#1 “Take Pills” by Panda Bear-A: Mellow mellowness wrapped into a burrito. Maybe.
#2 “No Surprises” by Radiohead-J: Thom Yorke has “morbid lullaby” on lock, so it felt obvious to put this on here.
#3 “Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell” by Flaming Lips-M: I’m not sure why I picked this song. I’m on a Flaming Lips kick, give me a break.
#4 “In the Deep Time” by Candy Claws-A: This here is an ambient piece of lullaby that is insistent on making you fall asleep.
#5 “The Sequel” by St. Vincent-J: Actor is a subversive record that builds to a calmer, straighter ending that has impact through sheer pretty.
#6: “Rain Smell” by Baths-M: Baths vividly creates the sensation of falling asleep in the rain so you can do exactly that without, you know, actually sleeping in the rain.
#7 “Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid)” by Sufjan Stevens-A: Though the song is depressing, it has a progression that’s capable of making you feel right and able to fall asleep.
#8 “Long Division” by Fugazi-J: Hypnotic suffering brotherhood music.
#9: “It’s Okay” by Land of Talk-M: Alongside its soothing vocals is a calming message that will make all of your worries go away; it indeed is okay.
#10: “Oliver James” by Fleet Foxes-A: This song doesn’t have a lot going on in it, as it shouldn’t, but Robin Pecknold’s vocals woo you to a slumber.
#11 “I Don’t Know” by The Beastie Boys-J: It’s easy to over look Beastie Boys actually being talented musicians in the face of their image and weirdo videos, but even the Beasties can break it down when it’s time to.
#12 “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie-M: You couldn’t get a song any more low-key and subdued than this one.
#13 “Real Love” by Beach House-A: If you haven’t been able to tell, it’s songs like this that make me sleep. No disrespect to them in the slightest, because they’re great songs, but they just incline me to do so.
#14 “Another Day Full Of Dread” by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy-J: Accurate to my experiences trying to get to sleep on a regular basis.
#15 “By The River” by Brian Eno-M: Matt was actually asleep when I asked him for this write up, so we’re going to call that poetic and move on.
#16 “In The Pines” by Smog-A: Bill Callahan’s voice is sweet as it is melancholy. This is what it takes to make a good sleeping song.
#17 “Exist” by Neurosis-J: Cold, airy, and grim. I don’t like sleeping.
#18 “Re: Stacks” by Bon Iver-M: Bon Iver has such a pretty voice, you guys.
#19 Reprise: Andrew suggested it, gave it to Matt when he came in one under, but Matt had never heard the song. I like it enough to keep it on here, though.
