So John did his thing, now it’s my turn. If you don’t know what this is already, it’s simply our way of concisely reviewing a few albums that we believe you should hear. Let us begin:

James Blake – James Blake
This album has stuck with me pretty much all year. The first time I heard James Blake as an artist was extremely different to my reaction of his debut full-length, with CMYK being a great example of house-dubstep, the last thing I had expected to hear was a singer-songwriter angle. There was just something about the left curve he threw that was pretty far from what I had come to expect over the CMYK and Klavierwerke EPs. Not only is he one of the most talented, young producers out there, his voice creates such realms of solidarity that I can’t leave just like that. So cheers to you, Blake. I want to hear more from you.
Get this shit on whatever form you feel is proper to your lifestyle, it’s not hard to find.

Shabazz Palaces – Black Up
Rap music. Yeah, I’d tell you that’s what this is, but this ain’t your average rap album. The beats that power Black Up are just so original to the genre making this probably the most refreshing release this year. The beats are great, but so are the rhymes. Abstract yet quirky and well-composed, the lyrics succeed along side the music like the most obvious combination analogy (i.e. peanut butter and jelly). Shabazz Palaces just ooze personality.
You can go on the Shabazz Palaces page on Sub Pop to hear some god’s music.

Iceage – New Brigade
I’ve listened to quite a bit of awesome post-punk and noise rock during my time writing on FOWR and this definitely contributes to that pile. Iceage channels some of the best imaginable influences: Wire, Big Black, and at times Lightning Bolt. This is the album for me. When I say that, I’m saying it has what I want out of fun. Not music, fun, because that’s what this is. Even when it’s straining at my eardrums I am loving the intensity of the sound and quick drum beats, which emphasizes its awesome throwback feel.
This is the harder to find but it’s probably available in enough record stores. Either way, you do have the digital option.
